El Día del Niño

Photos and Text by Elizabeth Barnes

October 1 is El Día del Niño (Children's Day) in Guatemala, and Pop Wuj celebrated both in Llanos de Pinal with the nutrition program and at our Family Support Center.

Family Support Center staff put up lovely decorations for the occasion.
Coordinator Amy Scheuren announces that we'll be watching a película...
...The Lego Movie!

Family Support Center staff also prepared dozens of "elotes locos" for a mid-movie treat.
Carmelina and Anjelica add mayonnaise, ketchup, and salt to the elotes.
Jonathan enjoys his elote loco (if not the inevitable corn stuck in his teeth)!
The only snag in our festivities was the movie volume — though the movie sounded fine when we tested it beforehand, it was almost inaudible at the Family Support Center. (Lots of chatter from the littler kids, scraping chairs, and noise from the other room didn't help.) Staff, interns, and students rallied to solve the problem.

Thanks to Spanish student Natasha for the brilliant idea to put the speaker in a bowl to amplify the volume!
Now able to hear the movie, the kids kicked back to watch the rest and chow down.

We hope you showed a little extra love to the children in your life this Día del Niño, elotes locos or no. ¡Que tengas un buen fin de semana!
